Noreen Mullaney was appointed to the Regional School Unit 13 Board of Directors Aug. 25.

The Board of Selectmen chose Mullaney to replace Marla McGeady, who resigned Aug. 15 as one of two representing Thomaston on the school board. Ronald Gamage also was considered for the position.

"I think it's important having children in the district," said McGeady, endorsing the appointment of Mullaney, who has a son at Oceanside High School West.

McGeady also noted its important to have fresh faces to recreate the image of the district.

"I am optimistic we are moving forward," said McGeady, adding "We need to wake the people up."

"They are going to try to bury you in minutiae," said Chairman Greg Hamlin. "Parents, teachers and students all have to work together," he added.

Mullaney was one of the members of a group of concerned citizens in Thomaston who signed a petition that was circulating to withdraw from the school district earlier this year.

"I have been wanting to be on the board," said Mullaney. "I think there are really good things happening with the new superintendent and principals, and I think we are ready for a fresh start," she said.

RSU 13 serves the towns of Rockland, Thomaston, Owls Head, South Thomaston and Cushing.
