Camden Fire Department has received a Safety Enhancement Grant awarded by the Maine Municipal Association for $2,000.

The Safety Enhancement Grant program offers financial incentives to members of the Maine Municipal Association Worker’s Compensation Fund, according to a press release from the department. These grants are used to purchase safety equipment that assist in reducing the frequency and severity of workplace injuries. Improving workplace safety for municipal employees saves taxpayers money by reducing lost hours at work, cost of insurance claims and overtime expenses for employees who might have to fill in for injured co-workers.

Camden Fire Department used the grant funds to purchase safety equipment for the department’s ladder truck. An in-cab communication system with a radio interface was purchased and installed in the truck. The communication system significantly improves the ability of the firefighters in the truck to talk with each other and communicate via the radio. Previously, communications in the cab of the truck were hampered by the loud noise generated by the truck’s engine. This system includes headsets with built in microphones which enable the occupants of the truck use an intercom system to discuss plans and job assignments within the truck prior to arriving at an emergency incident.

Maine Municipal Association has been awarding safety grants to members of their Worker’s Compensation fund since 1999. The grant program has assisted municipalities by bestowing more than $3.2 million through funding of 2,527 Safety Enhancement Grants and 366 Scholarship Grants.

Ed MacDonald, Loss Control Manager for Maine Municipal Association, advised the program received 182 applications for the recent grant period and $154,499.18 was awarded.
