The Town of Friendship now has an official field to call its own.

After years of having its baseball field on School Street referred to as the “Town Ball Field,” the “Friendship Village Society Field” had its official unveiling on Saturday, July 2, in conjunction with the town's Friendship Day celebration.

The field has a rich history and has been used for baseball for generations of families who have come and gone.

It has been in the midst of repair for seven years and was brought up to code in May of 2013, making it a stomping ground for official Little League baseball and softball games.

The field previously was far from the pristine diamond it is now as it had uneven hills, weeds, broken glass and buried garbage littered about. Extensive field work began in recent years, including leveling, drainage and underground work before the more visible changes began to take place in recent years.

A large measure of fundraising has taken place in recent years to resurrect the field, which now has two dugouts, a snack shack, a storage shed, two sets of bleachers and a flagpole on site.

Head selectman Liz Dinsmore read the opening speech at the ceremony and acknowledged and thanked the volunteers, donors, local businesses and town officials who gave their time and support and throughout the years of work to resurrect the field.

Roughly 50 people were on hand for the opening ceremony, which preceded its first game under its new banner between the Friendship Fire Department and the Cushing Fire Department.

Friendship Recreation Director Wanda Benner said Friendship defeated Cushing in the game, though a rematch between the two departments already has been set in stone for next summer.

Benner said the field is open for use, be it Little League, adult leagues or as an auxiliary field for fall sports practices such as soccer.

“It's open to anybody,” she said. “We love to drive by and see families using it.”

Gene Grant of VFW 3095 led others in the field's first flag raising, while Daisy Lee sang the national anthem.
