Although small in numbers, the participants in the annual Midcoast Junior Golf Association championships on Sunday, Aug. 10 were big on talent — and enjoying themselves on the links.

On a beautiful, sunny, summer afternoon, 14 youngsters ages 7 to 14 hit the Rockland Golf Course for a nine-hole, end-of-season championship tournament.

When the final swings had been made and putts holed, Bailey Plourde, Parker Hilchey and Darik Johnson had earned first-place finishes in their respective divisions.

Plourde, one of the top young female golfers in the state, finished first in Division 1, for the top golfers in the MGJGA, while Hilchey won Division 2 and Johnson placed first in Division 3.

During the summer, the young golfers have the opportunity to compete in weekly tournaments at a variety of area courses, including Rockland, Samoset Resort Golf Club in Rockport, Goose River Golf Club in Rockport, Wawenock Golf Club in Walpole, Northport Golf Club, Sheepscot Links Golf Club in Whitfield and Appleton Country Club.

Plourde, who will be a sophomore at Lincoln Academy in Newcastle, won Division 1 for the second straight year. She shot 42 on the par-36 front nine at RGC.

Plourde, a member at the Samoset, has made quite a name for herself but competing with and defeating some of the state's top adult golfers.

In fact, this summer, Plourde, 14, finished third in the Women's Maine State Golf Association championship tournament and first among junior golfers in the same event. Her two-day, 36-hole total of 160 was three shots back of the overall winner. She also finished second, one stroke behind, in the Maine State Golf Association junior championships for girls ages 13-14.

The final nine-hole scores from Sunday's MCJGA tourney were:

Division 1 — 1, Plourde, 42; and 2, Ryan Lawrence, 46. Lawrence, who also will be a sophomore, is one of the top golfers for Oceanside.
