The third annual Medomak Valley Triathlon will be 8 a.m. on Saturday, Aug. 23 at Ayer Park. The event includes a quarter-mile swim, 13-mile bike ride and 3.2-mile run.

Same-day registration for the event, sponsored by the Medomak Valley High School Class of 2015, will begin at 6:30 a.m. Each leg of the race will begin and end at Ayer Park.

The previous two years have seen participation double, and event organizers hope for at least a 50 percent increase from last year to this year.

“It's amazing how quickly this race has caught on,” said Susan Jones, advisor for the Class of 2015. “The first year, these kids had just finished their freshman year, and now they're going to be seniors.”

Jones gives much of the credit to Gavin Felch, who has been class president all four years.

“Gavin thought it would be a good fundraiser, but I had my doubts," she said. "Who among us has put together a triathlon? But he was persistent and did a lot of the ground work himself, and here we are three years later.”

She also credits the "fantastic" team of students and parents who have volunteered time and expertise to put together a fun, safe race.

“If it wasn't for them, we wouldn't be gearing up for a third year — the volunteers have really pushed this thing forward," Jones said.

Sponsorship for the triathlon is a three-tiered system: cash and prizes valued at under $50, which will get the sponsor's name on a sign at the registration table; cash and prizes valued $50 to $149, which gets the sponsor's name on the race t-shirts; and more than $150, which gets the sponsor's name on a printed banner.

Those interested in sponsoring the event should call Jones at 409-6905 or email her at
