The Office of the Maine Attorney General is actively investigating a case of missing funds from the-now dissolved South Thomaston Fireman's Association account.

The money, nearly $15,000, was to be donated to the town by the association for the purchase of a new fire truck, said Town Clerk John Spear.

The town's Board of Selectmen is reviewing fire truck bids at its Tuesday, Aug. 19 meeting, as well as discussing the missing money. In May, residents approved the purchase of a new truck valued up to $350,000.

Bank records show the last person known to possess the money was former Fire Chief Wayne A. Brown, according to Spear. Records show Brown personally withdrew the money from Camden National Bank in July 2012.

Spear said the missing money has been a source of frustration for townspeople, who often inquire as to what the status of the investigation is.

In a letter addressed to Attorney General Janet Mills, the association, which dissolved in 2007, said Brown was not authorized to withdraw or handle the funds.

Brown, although a former association member, was not an officer of the association and did not have any authority from the association to withdraw the funds or to assume custody of them, a letter from the association to the attorney general read.

In July, the board sent a letter to the attorney general requesting an update of the investigation. Investigator Brian MacMaster responded and said although the office cannot comment further, an active investigation is ongoing.

Knox County Sheriff Donna Dennison told the select board she will not be duplicating the effort of the A.G.'s office.

A message left for Brown seeking comment has not been returned.
