Jonathan Frost Gallery will host the opening reception for a “Tidal Affair” show of large pastels by Pam Cabañas Friday, Aug. 1, from 5 to 8 p.m. Pianist Steve Lindsay will play at the gallery, located at the corner of Main Street and Park Drive.

The artist describes herself as a bit an itinerant explorer. She often loads her 14-foot skiff with painting gear and explores the archipelago of small, uninhabited islands off Friendship and Cushing.

“With the change in the tides, this whole Bierstadt-like world arises. The falling of the tide brings the rising of these incredible landscapes,” she said.

Cabañas holds a BFA in Painting and Printmaking from the New York State College of Ceramics, Alfred University; and an MFA in Art Education from the University of New Mexico. She has a varied work history that includes making and teaching art, working on a coffee plantation, training horses, teaching equestrian skills and creating faux finishes as owner of Cabañas Decorative Arts. Since her move to Friendship 12 years ago, she has been able to devote most of her time to producing art. She also works as an assessor for the Town of Friendship and as a docent at the Olson House for the Farnsworth Art Museum.

abañas has exhibited frequently throughout the Midcoast and has had solo shows at the Tidemark Gallery in Waldoboro, Richard Boyd Art Gallery on Peaks Island and the Maine Art Gallery in Wiscasset.

“Pam Cabañas: Tidal Affair” will be up through Sept. 2.  The Jonathan Frost Gallery is open Tuesdays through Saturdays from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. For more information, call 596-0800; email; or visit
