New Era Gallery on Main Street will open its mid-summer show Saturday, July 19, featuring work by Cat Bates, Peter Bodnar III, Pam Johnson and David Smus. A panel discussion with the artists will be held in the Windy Way Barn at 4:30 p.m., with an opening reception from 5 to 7 p.m.

The work of each of the four featured artists is rooted in tradition. Bates’ hand-cast bronze jewelry is inspired by the forms of nautical hardware found on traditional sailing vessels, with hand-crafted cording and knotting of marlinspike seamanship. Bodnar has spent the past several years on a series of island landscape paintings that combine 19th-century color glazing techniques with contemporary materials and composition. Johnson is a mentor-trained artist whose particular approach to color and composition result in beautifully balanced paintings of island views and themes. Smus, who originally trained as a wildlife scientist, is well-known for his life-like cast bronze representations of the birds and animals of the Maine habitat.

The exhibition will run through Aug. 6.  Summer gallery hours are Mondays through Saturdays from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. and Sundays from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. For more information, call 863-9351 or visit neweragallery.com.
