American singer/songwriter and musician Anais Mitchell, described as the queen of modern folk music, will present her current “Child Ballads” release and tour, an award-winning collection of epic old Celtic and British Isles ballads, in collaboration with Jefferson Hamer Saturday, July 19, at 7:30 p.m. at the Strand Theatre, 345 Main St.

Opening the show will be Heather Maloney, a rising star with a startlingly soulful voice and songwriting that explores themes of spirituality and transformation; and Sara Hallie Richardson, a Midcoast-raised, Portland-based singer/songwriter known for her folk, indie and electronic music styles.

Mitchell and Hamer had discovered their shared love of Celtic and British Isles ballads and, inspired by the classic folk albums of the 1970s, they arranged and recorded some of their favorites together. The resulting songs are driven by two-guitar arrangements and the kind of close harmonies that call to mind Gram Parsons and Emmylou Harris or an acoustic Fleetwood Mac.

“We kept thinking back to those records we loved so much,” said Mitchell, “and finally decided that what the songs wanted was to be presented as simply as possible; melody, harmony, acoustic instruments, live taping —the stories really out front.”

Tickets are $20, general admission. For information on all upcoming live concerts, films, HD broadcasts and events at the Strand, visit; call 594-0070, ext. 3; or email
