Those awaiting the naming of a new Regional School Unit 13 athletic director will be forced to wait a bit longer.

Twelve applicants have applied for the position, but the interview process likely will not begin for a few weeks.

RSU 13 has many high-ranking officials who have resigned for various reasons over the past six months, notably interim superintendent Michael Wilhelm, former superintendent Lew Collins, Oceanside East principal Tom Forti, Oceanside West principal Larry Schooley, business manager Scott Vaitones and athletic director Jim Leonard, among others.

Wilhelm's final day at RSU 13 is Friday, June 27. Leon Levesque will be the new RSU 13 superintendent beginning Tuesday, July 1.

With the transition between superintendents, the interview process for a new athletic director likely will not begin until Levesque begins in his new position, said Barbara Dyer, who works in RSU 13 human resources.

Dyer said a committee to select the new athletic director has yet to be chosen.

Fall and winter coaches were approved at the Thursday, June 26 school board meeting, while the decision on spring coaches will be held off until a new athletic director is chosen.

Leonard resigned in May and has been named the athletic director at Maine Central Institute of Pittsfield, another Kennebec Valley Athletic Conference Class B school. Leonard was an AD in the Midcoast seven years — in RSU 13 (high school and middle school) for three and prior to that for School Administrative District 5 (high school and middle school).
