Symphony of the Soil June 27

Don’t treat soil like dirt. That’s the message of this month’s free movie at Living Communities. “Symphony of the Soil” is an acclaimed film by Deborah Coons Garcia that has farmers, scientists, and ranchers from four continents describing the complexity of the miraculous stuff we call soil. The Living Communities Foundation, based at the Palermo Community Center on Turner Ridge Road will present a potluck supper and movie tomorrow, Friday, June 27, starting at 6 p.m. Everyone is welcome to join in the potluck or just come for the movie. For more information, call Connie at 993-2294.

Historical Society to establish exhibit

At last week’s Washington Historical Society (WHS) meeting, plans were begun for an open house to be held Sept. 6 at Washington’s Original Old Town House, 264 Razorville Road. Over the past year the Society has sponsored excavation, sill replacement, and tree work. Inside improvements by WHS volunteers have begun with the goal of fashioning stalls to display some of the large collection of artifacts that belong to the society. Membership in WHS is $5 a year and can be sent to P.O. Box 333, Washington. Any interested residents and visitors are welcome at all our events and meetings. Our next meeting is Tuesday, July 15, at the Bryant Room of Gibbs Library. An item on our wish list is a copying machine for the office. Contact WHS at or 845-2661, or just come to a meeting.

Heads up for Washington Challenge

Waaayyyy in the future — Aug. 2 — the Washington Recreation Committee is once again holding the 5K Run and a 1-mile Fun Run. The assembly point is Prescott Memorial School (100 Waldoboro Road). The 5K race starts there and goes through the village of Washington, up the Bill Luce Road and back. The fun run starts at the school, down to the village, around the monument and back to the school. There will be medals for all winners and a raffle after the races are completed. Everyone is invited to participate or at least be an encouraging spectator. There’s a registration form on the town website news section with details. Pre-registering will help ensure enough T-shirts for all participants. We’ve got five weeks to get in shape! Call Helen at 542-4639 for more information.
