Healthy Lincoln County will once again sponsor a Summer Food Service Program in Lincoln and Knox counties.

There will be seven site locations this year in six different towns. All of the sites will be open sites; meaning that anyone 18 years and younger can receive a free meal, regardless where you live, or if you are participating in a program at that site location.

Summer Food Service is a program of the United States Department of Agriculture and is funded similarly to the school lunch program throughout the school year. The summer program is designed to have two major benefits for a community. One is to get healthy meals out to kids and teens and second is to promote programs and sites that increase physical activity of children. Eating well and being active over the summer months has been proven to help kids return to school ready to learn.

Many of the meal locations have participated for all three years of the program. However there will be two new sites in 2014. One at the Congregational Church in Bristol, made possible through a grant from Good Shepard Food Bank, and one at the Thompson Community Center in Union, which will host a week-long art camp, but will also be serving meals to the general public.

Many of the sites will have raffle prizes available for kids that participate, each time a child comes and receives a meal they will be entered to win fun weekly prizes including a new Razor scooter, sports equipment and more.

The program will run for nine weeks total, starting June 23 and running through Aug. 22. This year's raffle prizes, games/sports equipment, coolers, shade tents and site picnic tables were made available by a grant from the United Thank Offering of the Episcopal Church. Healthy Lincoln County partnered with two local Episcopal churches to seek that grant funding, St. Andrews Church in Newcastle and St. Phillips Church in Wiscasset.
