On Sunday, May 18, the Farnsworth Art Museum will open a new student exhibition titled “Stories of the Land and Its People: An Arts Integrated School Initiative for Midcoast Maine.” The show includes the work of more than 260 students who participated in a yearlong collaboration between the Farnsworth Art Museum and six public schools.

The public opening will begin with a 1 p.m. program at the Strand Theatre, 345 Main St., followed by a preview and reception in the downtown museum and at Julia’s Gallery, at the corner of Union and Elm streets; note that Julia’s Gallery is not handicapped accessible.

Now In its third year, the Stories of the Land and its People project has expanded from 140 to 260 local students. Participating schools include fourth and seventh grade classes from Appleton, Hope, Islesboro, Lincolnville and Rockland’s South School and District Middle schools. This year-long arts integrated initiative for Midcoast public schools has students working with museum educators, professional artists, classroom teachers, art teachers and community members to tell the story of their community through art. During the project, students worked with Education Project Manager Andrea Curtis and professional artist Matthew Smolinksy in the classroom to connect aesthetic education to classroom learning.

The exhibition opening ceremony is free and open to the public. The show will run through Aug. 31 in the museum’s Craig Gallery and at Julia's Gallery. For more information, visit farnsworthmuseum org. The Stories of the Land and Its People project is supported by the Arthur K.
