London’s National Theatre “NT Live” season of play broadcasts continues Thursday, May 1, at the Strand Theatre, 345 Main St., with “King Lear,” live at 2 p.m. and rebroadcast at 7 p.m.

Academy Award winner Sam Mendes (“Skyfall,” “American Beauty”) returns to the National Theatre to direct the renowned Simon Russell Beale (“Timon of Athens,” “Collaborators”) in the title role of Shakespeare’s tragedy.

An aged king decides to divide his kingdom between his three daughters, according to which of them is most eloquent in praising him. His favorite, Cordelia, says nothing; Lear takes offense and his world descends into chaos.
