Poetry Month Rockland’s annual celebration A Swarm of Poets is set for Thursday, April 24, at 6 p.m. in the Friends Community Room of Rockland Public Library, 80 Union St.

A Swarm of Poets promises an evening of readings by a dozen or more Maine poets, as well readings by the winners of this year’s Rockland Poetry Contest. Rockland Poet Laureate Carol Bachofner will emcee the event, as well as read from her work. She is the author of four books of poetry and contributor to dozens of nationally recognized journals.

Belfast Poet Laureate Ellen Sander also will participate. Sander's poetry has been published in several journals including the Saturday Afternoon Journal, Social Anarchism and Dongxi. Two former Belfast Poet Laureates will be on hand. Jacob Fricke has been performing poetry in the area for more than a decade, appearing on the stage, on sidewalks, on radio, at rock concerts, at schools, at summer fairs and more. Elizabeth W. Garber, now of Northport, spent seven years organizing the annual Belfast Poetry Festival. Garrison Keillor has read three of her poems on “The Writer’s Almanac.”

Judy Kaber was born in Brooklyn, N.Y., and moved to Maine many years ago. Her poems have been published in a number of journals, both print and electronic. Margie Kivel and Elizabeth Berkenbile are members of the High Tide Poets Group. Bremen poet Eve Forti is the author of 2012’s “Holding My Breath.” Mary Jane Martin is a Rockland poet. In addition to writing poetry, Bob MacLaughlin of Warren has been a newspaper sportswriter, magazine editor and advertising copywriter for print and broadcast.

Many others will read, as will the winners of this year’s poetry contest, which called for work several categories: Child 1, Pre-K to third grade; Child 2, fourth to seventh grade; Teen, eighth through 12th grades; and Adult, college age and beyond.
