Local writers are among the more than 25 well-known and emerging poets who take part in thee 12th annual Poets/Speak! event Wednesday, April 23, from 4:15 to 8 p.m. in the lecture hall of Bangor Public Library, 145 Harlow St.

Poets/Speak! is one of the largest free poetry events in the state. This year’s poets will raise their voices for social, political and environmental justice in honor of recently departed poets Amiri Baraka, Maxine Kumin and Jose Emilio Pacheco. The event begins with live jazz by the Swingmatism Quintet and a chance to browse the books and meet the poets.

The annual celebration is coordinated by Orono poet and University of Maine lecturer in English Kathleen Ellis. Among those joining her for this year’s Poets/Speak! will be Belfast Poet Laureate Ellen Sander and former Belfast Poet Laureates Jacob Fricke, Linda Buckmaster and Karin Spitfire; Dave Morrison of Camden; and many more.
