Artists are invited to submit work for jurying into the “Our Community” exhibition, which will open with a 5 to 7 p.m. reception Friday, May 25, and run through May 22 at River Arts on Route 1. Work is no later than 4 p.m. Saturday, April 19.

Work can be in any media and should address the theme. Artists are encouraged to take the theme of  “Our Community” broadly — family, friends, activities; neighborhoods, gatherings, things that bring us together; community of present, past or imagined. Up to three works may be submitted.

The juror for the exhibition is Susan Danly, who served as senior curator at Portland Museum of Art 2002 through 2012. A specialist in American art and the history of photography, Danly holds doctorate and master’s degrees from Brown University, where she wrote a dissertation on the landscape photographs of Alexander Gardner and A.J. Russell. A curator of American art with more than 30 years of experience, Danly also worked at the Mead Art Museum (1993-2000), the Pennsylvania Academy of the Fine Arts (1988-93) and the Huntington Library and Art Gallery (1984-87).

Among Danly’s numerous publications are books on the photographs of Edward Weston and Thomas Eakins; and “Georgia O’Keeffe and The Camera.” At the Portland Museum of Art, she curated numerous exhibitions devoted to the art of Maine including three Biennial exhibitions; a series of shows dealing with historical and contemporary photography in Maine; and several exhibitions of graphics from the PMA’s permanent collection

All media, styles and subjects are welcome. All work entered must be for sale. Wall-hung work size maximum is 60 inches in height, 42 inches in width; and for safety reasons, Plexiglas or other non-glass option should be used for work over 34 inches, excluding pastels. Early submissions are accepted within usual gallery hours. Artists may submit up to three works for an entry fee of $20, $15 for members. Artists will be notified by email or phone of the juror’s decision. Submissions may not have been shown at River Arts previously.
