Knox County Sheriff's Office is investigating a complaint about an infant taken to Pen Bay Medical Center with a traumatic head injury.

Knox County Sheriff’s Office received a complaint at approximately 5:45 p.m. March 29 from the Department of Health and Human Services regarding a child less than one year old, according to a press release from Chief Deputy Tim Carroll.

Mandatory reporting by the hospital to DHHS, due to the age of the child, subsequently involved Knox County Sheriff’s Office at the request of DHHS.

Deputies stood by at the child's residence in St. George until necessary personnel from Maine State Police Major Crimes Unit arrived. Due to the age of the child and the reported injuries, state protocol dictates an investigation is to be conducted by State Police, Carroll said.

At this time there is no indication of any suspicion, Carroll said, and the parents are cooperative and assisting with the investigation. The child was listed in “satisfactory” condition as of 11:30 a.m. March 30, according to police.
