Rock City Cafe's Velvet Lounge series will present Tom Albury Friday, Oct. 4, from 5 to 7 p.m. There is no cover charge; however, tipping the musicians is highly encouraged.

Albury has been writing songs since he was 12. Growing up in the 1960s in the downriver Detroit area, he was exposed to a good variety of music at an early age, from Motown to Chopin to Dylan and beyond. Some of his original arrangements are classic folk, but others defy labeling — employing changes in chords, beat or key that could come from nowhere but an active imagination.

Albury has been playing to audiences large and small for more than 30 years. Along with originals, he covers songs by artists such as Bob Dylan, Marvin Gaye, Nora Jones, The Waterboys, Van Morrison and many others.
