‘Philosophy’ in film-and-discussion series

Rockland Public Library will kick off a six-part philosophy film series titled “Philosophy: A Guide to Happiness” Thursday, Oct. 3, at 6:30 p.m. in the Friends Community Room of the library, 80 Union St. Special accommodations for persons with disabilities can be made with 48 hours notice by calling 594-0310.

The six-part television documentary series, presented by popular British philosopher Alain de Botton (“The Consolations of Philosophy,” 2001), features six thinkers who have influenced history and their ideas about the pursuit of happiness. Discussions will follow the short films, led by Richard Fortuna a URock Student and Vice-President of the Honors Program.

Part I, screened Oct. 3, is titled “Socrates on Self-Confidence” and runs 24 minutes. “The unexamined life is not worth living,” is a quote attributed to Socrates. Why do so many people go along with the crowd and fail to stand up for what they truly believe? Partly because they are too easily swayed by other people's opinions and partly because they do not know when to have confidence in their own.

Remaining episodes are: Tuesday, Oct. 15, “Epicurus on Happiness”; Thursday, Nov. 7, “Seneca on Anger’; Thursday, Nov. 21, “Montaigne on Self-Esteem’; Thursday, Dec. 5, “Schopenhauer on Love’; and Thursday, Dec. 19, “Nietzsche on Hardship.” The series serves as a clear, easy to understand introduction to how philosophy is both relevant and vital today.

This is one in a continuing mostly Thursday series of literary, film and cultural offerings sponsored by the library and the Friends of the Rockland Public Library.  The Friends Community Room is located in the lower level of the library. Admission is free.
