Friends of the Thomaston Public Library presents its Friday Night Film Series with screenings weekly at 7 p.m. in the community room of Thomaston Public Library in the Thomaston Academy Building, 60 Main St./Route 1. September’s theme is Apartheid and Mandela.
The film for Sept. 13 is 1988’s “A World Apart,” which is rated PG and runs 114 minutes. This powerful examination of apartheid stars Barbara Hershey as South African journalist Diana Roth, the first white woman jailed for her political activism. Roth's fierce commitment to the cause is unfathomable to her 13-year-old daughter (Jodhi May), who feels hurt and resentful of her mother's intense focus on issues outside the family. This drama, based on true events, is a wrenching indictment of political oppression and was a multiple award winner at the Cannes Film Festival.
Friday Night Films are open to the public and free of charge, but donations are gratefully accepted. Popcorns and drinks will be served. The Thomaston Academy building is handicapped accessible from the rear entrance. For more information, call the library at 354-2453.
