Geologist Woodrow “Woody” Thompson will speak on how the Ice Age shaped Maine’s coast, natural resources and land use at Merryspring Nature Center on Tuesday, Sept. 10, at noon.

Thompson’s talk will cover how Ice Age glaciers shaped the Maine landscape, particularly describing the effects of the last great ice sheet along the coast at a time when much of southern Maine was covered by the sea. Thompson will relate this history to Maine’s rich legacy of natural resources and how it still affects land use in Maine today. The talk will also present results of recent geologic mapping efforts of the Midcoast region.

Thompson has worked for the Maine Geological Survey since 1975. He also teaches geology courses and has collaborated in many research projects with the University of Maine, including the development of the Ice Age Trail in Hancock and Washington counties.
