On Aug. 24, the inaugural Rockland Walk to Cure Diabetes took place.

Sarah Morin Bickford along with friends and family started planning for the event back in May. The idea for the event began on a whim. Bickford had participated in a walk with her family years ago, but she expressed to friends that she had not participated in a walk in years. The nearest event she was able to find for this year was set to be in Saco. Wishing to have a walk closer to home — it was the spark that started it all.

The organization chosen was the Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation, a non-profit organization that supports research into looking for a cure for type 1 diabetes.

On Aug. 24, 65 walkers participated, raising money through businesses and family support. There were also several businesses that donated to support the event including funds to print the T-shirts, funds to print the posters hung up around town, raffle items and food for the walkers and volunteers.

The goal set by Bickford and her planning team was to raise $5,000 — an ambitious goal seeing that this was their first year. At the end of the event, $7,800 had been raised and all donated to JDRF.

As the walkers returned, Sen. Edward Mazurek, D, Rockland stopped in to praised Bickford and her efforts, a surprising encouragement of Bickford and event organizers. The huge success of the event has further encouraged Bickford to do the walk again. Next year, look for the event to be promoted around town with colorful posters, watch for notifications from friends on Facebook that they are attending the event, or check out the Northern New England event page of JDRF at nne.jdrf.org for the dates and details.
