Oh, my! Meet Laverne, a 4-year-old pug who is smitten with people. She loves to be with people no matter what they are doing, but especially if they are paying attention to her — and with a face like hers, who wouldn’t? Laverne is particularly partial to taking walks and smelling out all the interesting things that hide from her in the grass. She loves the staff at P.A.W.S .— as do we! — but what she really wants is a home of her own. And you can see from the look on her face that she’s pretty sure she’ll get one. Paws crossed.

Some of our truly wonderful cats have something in common: They are not sure they will ever have a home of their own. This is because they are always overlooked, cast in the shadow of their colleagues who are bolder or brighter or sassier and ready to get their paw in the door as soon as it opens on a prospective adopter. Every time they are not chosen, they lose just a little hope but our heart breaks for them.

Often these shy marvels are black or black-and-white cats, so throughout the month of September they will be available for adoption for whatever an adopter cares to donate. We don’t know why these colors are so hard for people to choose. We have one of each and they have the most wonderful personalities and joy in life that we can’t imagine why we never had them before. Maybe it’s because black cats are popularly associated with bad luck, or that tuxedo cats seem ordinary because there are so many.

But every one of those many is a personality all his or her own. Like Cleo, our beautiful black sprite, one of those cats still looking for a home.  Cleo has been at P.A.W.S. for more than a year and a half, and nobody has taken the time to see what a special creature she is. This loving, playful girl is about 5 years old and came to us when her family couldn’t take her to their new home. She is easy to please — she loves to sit in the window and look out at the crazy world around her but she’d be just as happy sitting in a lap.  We really think it is Cleo’s time to find her fur-ever home and we bet that if you came in to meet her you’d find that that fur-ever home could be yours. Take the time to stop by and meet her.

We are always looking for help with taking our cats to spend the day at several local banks in hopes that they will find their person there.  They are great favorites with the people at Camden National and KeyBank and a good many of our adoptions have come through this channel. Taking them to and from the banks is fun and rewarding, and the people who do this job are thrilled when one of “their” cats finds a home. Give us a call and we’ll fill you in on the details.

On our wish list, as always: non-lumping cat litter, dry and canned cat food and volunteers. Yes, people like you!!

Please take the time to drop by and see us and all our beautiful babes at 146 Camden St. in Rockport. We’re open from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. Tuesday through Sunday, our phone number is 236-8702 and pawsadoption.org is never closed! And thank you, as always, for your caring and support.
