Families are invited to attend the Hope Children’s Festival Saturday, Aug. 24, from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. at the Sweetland Center, 4 Church St. The community event will celebrate the arts through music, dance, visual arts, story and poetry with special guest, honored author and artist Ashley Bryan.

Bryan grew up to the sound of his mother singing from morning to night and he has shared the joy of song with children ever since. A beloved illustrator, he has been the recipient of the Coretta Scott King-Virginia Hamilton Lifetime Achievement Award and the Laura Ingalls Wilder Award; he also has been a May Hill Arbuthnot lecturer, a Coretta Scott King Award winner and the recipient of countless other awards and recognitions.

Bryan lives in Islesford, one of the Cranberry Isles off the coast of Maine, where he can often be found with a cluster of children, all singing. He will share poetry and stories, and attending children and families will celebrate his works through original music and art.

Other local artists and organizations will share a diverse celebration of the arts offering demonstrations and performances. They include Midcoast Music Together; Liza Gardner Walsh; Peaceful Warrior with Chuck Nguyen; Maho Hisakawa; Malcolm Brooks; Ian Brooks; Warren, Jill and Peter Galloway; and Sweet Tree Arts.

There will be live original music by local musicians, a community art project, drumming and dancing, face painting and a raffle for items from many local businesses such as Fresh off the Farm, Clean Bee Laundry, Bagel Café, Barefoot Books, Atlantica, Fresh and many more. Admission is free, thanks to the event’s sponsors, but donations are gratefully accepted for the Sweet Tree Arts scholarship fund. Helping to bring Bryan to Hope are sponsors Pen Bay Pilot, Hope General Store, Hope Orchards, Hatchet Mountain Publick House and Sweet Tree Arts. For more information, visit sweettreearts.org. All ages are welcome.
