Schools in Regional School Unit 13 will be starting and ending at different times this school year to allow high school students to begin school a half-hour later.

Oceanside East and West will begin at 8 a.m. and get out at 2:30 p.m. Rockland District Middle School will start at 7:50 a.m. and end at 2:20 p.m. while Thomaston Grammar School will start at 7:55 a.m. and end at 2:25 p.m. All elementary schools will start at 9 a.m. and end at 3:30 p.m.

Having all schools begin at the same time would require the purchase of six new buses and hiring six new drivers, a price tag the district cannot afford, according to a news release from RSU 13.

Realizing there are many working parents who will be affected by the later start time for elementary students, the principals in each elementary school will work with parent groups to arrange space and staff for early childcare. The only stipulation will be that it must be self-funded by the parents, but that cost would be lower than traditional daycare costs. The only charge is whatever it costs to pay for staff, so the more parents participating, the lower the cost would be. Please contact the school’s principal to inquire about starting an early childcare program at the school.
