Benefit rummage sale

ROCKLAND — A benefit rummage sale and family fun day will be held on Saturday, Aug. 10, from 9 a.m. to noon at the Rockland Crossroads Church of the Nazarene. The benefit is to help Steve and Sherry Grierson of Cushing.

A bake sale and quilt raffle will be part of the sale and kid-friendly activities outside on the church lawn. Following the sale at noon, there will be a barbecue of hotdogs, hamburgers and chips. There is no charge, but donations to the Griersons will be welcome.

Public supper in Washington

WASHINGTON — The Evening Star Grange, 31 Old Union Road, will hold a public supper Saturday, Aug. 10, from 4:30 to 6:30 p.m. The dinner includes Italian fare. Dessert and beverage included. Cost: $8 adults, $4 children. For more information, call Priscilla at 845-2026.

Win an autographed baseball bat

WALDOBORO — There will be a special drawing during the Waldoboro Fire Departments three-day 175th anniversary celebration Aug. 9-11 of an autographed baseball bat signed by Boston Red Sox legend Carl Yastrzemski.

Yastrzemski played 23 years with the Boston Red Sox. He is a member of the Baseball Hall of Fame, elected in 1989. Yastrzemski was selected to 17 All Star Games, won seven Gold Gloves, achieved 3,419 Hits and 452 Home Runs and won the Triple Crown in 1967. His famous No. 8 has been retired by the Boston Red Sox and sits on top of Fenway Park.

Tickets are $1 each or six for $5 and may be purchased now from any Waldoboro Fire Department member or during the event at the Fire Department souvenir booth. Drawing will be Sunday, Aug. 11 at the Sukeforth Field prior to the fireworks show.

Bikes for Books continues

WALDOBORO — The Bikes for Books program is still going on at the Waldoboro Public Library, and it is not too late for new readers to join in.

This program is sponsored by the King Solomon's Lodge of Masons of Waldoboro, with the bikes donated by the Movie/Pizza Shoppe of Waldoboro and Lou Abbotoni, CPA.

For every five picture books or two chapter books read, the reader gets a raffle ticket toward winning a new bike. There are six prize bikes: three boy and three girl styles, in sizes 16, 20, and 24-inch, and all bikes come with helmets. The drawing will be Saturday, Aug. 10. UNION — Vose Library's annual Book and Bake sale will be held Saturday, Aug. 10, from 8 a.m. to 2 p.m., at the garage on the Common in Union. Books and more books.

Waldoboro bingo changes format

WALDOBORO — Starting Tuesday, Aug. 13, the Waldoboro VFW Post will change its bingo format to shorten the evening and save players some money.

The first game will be a three-game Early Bird on the top blue sheet. The flow will be a straight bingo (Including four corners) and a special. Guaranteed prizes for these games total $55. The third game is a blackout with a prize of $50 or $100 depending on the numbers called. Additional Early Bird sheets are available at $2 each.

The Arrow Game is eliminated. The 50/50 game is still $2 per sheet and the winner-take-all is $3 per sheet. This change increases the card prices, but players will pay the same total price.

Members needed for Knox’s New Local Advisory Council

ROCKLAND — Volunteers are needed to serve on the Spectrum Generations Knox Community Center's Local Advisory Council.

Members assist the center in planning events and activities, help identify unmet needs in the community; connect people with center programs, activities and services; and assist with advocacy efforts and fundraising to support the mission and vision of Spectrum Generations. LAC members help to formulate, shape and implement the Knox Center’s annual goals and operations plan. The LAC chairperson represents the center at Senior Advisory Council meetings.

To learn how to become an advocate for aging in Knox County, please join Regional Director Marianne Pinkham, for a conversation about the role of an LAC in an active and engaged community center.

Magic show at Rockland Public Library

ROCKLAND — The library summer reading program continues with this exciting event — Dig Up Clues at the Rockland Public Library with Greg McAdams.

Children must help super sleuth Greg and his trusty dog Axel (yes, a real dog) find clues using books and the Library to solve: “The Case of the Missing Library card.

Class of 1941 to hold reunion

ROCKLAND — The members of Rockland High School Class of 1941 will hold its 72nd class reunion on Friday, Aug. 16, at 2 p.m. at the home of Lucille Payson, 93 Rankin St. in Rockland.
