Friends of the Thomaston Public Library presents its Friday Night Film Series with screenings weekly at 7 p.m. in the community room of Thomaston Public Library in the Thomaston Academy Building, 60 Main St./Route 1. August’s theme is French Gems.

The Aug. 9 film is "The Girl on the Bridge," a 90-minute movie from 1999. A despondent girl named Adele (Vanessa Paradis) is about to take a swan dive off a bridge into the Seine River when she is rescued by Gabor (Daniel Auteuil), a knife thrower who needs a human target for his show. The luckless Adele agrees, and together the pair thrives. They win a fortune gambling when not performing their act, but fate conspires to separate the duo, who find they need each other to maintain their lucky streak.

Friday Night Films are open to the public and free of charge, but donations are gratefully accepted. Light refreshments will be served. The Thomaston Academy building is handicapped accessible from the rear entrance. For more information, call the library at 354-2453.
