A resolution introduced by Maine’s Sens. Susan Collins and Angus King Jr. designates Wednesday, Aug. 7 as National Lighthouse Day.
This is the first step in what is hoped to become a federal law that will declare every Aug. 7 hereafter as National Lighthouse Day for the upcoming 225th anniversary in 2014 of the federalization of the nation's lighthouses.
Tim Harrison, editor of Lighthouse Digest magazine, who has been campaigning for the designation for the last 15 years, worked closely with Peter H. Benoit of King’s office to make this a reality.
