New Era Gallery on Main Street will open “Late Summer 2013” Saturday, Aug. 3, with an artists’ reception from 5 to 7 p.m. The show will feature mixed media work by Tom Butler, photo-encaustics by Kathryn Osgood and oil paintings by Scott Moore. The Windy Way Barn, located directly behind the gallery, will concurrently feature an installation of photographs by Torie Olson.

In his current work, Butler conceals found photographs, etchings and postcards with personal symbols such as hair, hoods and masks painted on the surface with gouache. Osgood's photo-encaustics explore the workings of memory and dislocation as she searches for an intimacy and dialogue with the intangible world. Moore, a familiar figure on the island, has found inspiration for his rich plein air paintings there for nearly 30 years.

Photographer/author Olson spent the winter of 2012-13 in the inspiring company of tsunami survivors in Sri Lanka and south India. Her images speak of the universal human experiences of loss and resilience; and of the healing power of sharing grief and beauty.

The exhibition will run through Aug. 28.  Summer gallery hours are Mondays through Saturdays from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m.; and Sundays from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. For more information, call 863-9351 or visit neweragallery.com.
