Ruth Monsell, a professional Midcoast silhouettist with more than 30 years experience, will create hand-cut portraits Friday, Aug. 2, from noon to 4 p.m. at Planet Toys, 318 Main St., just steps away from the Maine Lobster Festival grounds.

Traditional, freehand cut silhouettes of babies, children and adults will be done from live five-minute sittings. There are just handful of skilled, experienced silhouettists who cut freehand, using only scissors and a trained eye, in all of the United States; Monsell is the only person she knows of in Maine keeping alive this historical art form, one of the least costly forms of original art portraiture.

Monsell of Damariscotta has become internationally known through her website, ArtfulHeirlooms.com, and by cutting profiles aboard international cruise ships. Advance appointments for sittings are advised; call 563-2920 or (866) 212-7288. Walk-ins will be accommodated as time permits. The artist also is happy to cut silhouettes of pets and loved loves not present from clear close-up profile photos. Samples may be seen at Planet Toys or on her website.
