Art of the Sea will open its “Exhibition 2013, A Gathering of Marine Masters” Thursday, Aug. 1, with a public reception for the artists from 5:30 to 7:30 p.m. Entertainment will be provided by the Angela Anderson Duo with catering by Tracy Pleines. The exhibit will run through Labor Day at Art of the Sea, at the Keag on Route 73.

The 14th annual “Masters” will include a number of new works of Maine from internationally renowned artists John Stobart, Patrick O’Brien and Don Stone, painted expressly for this exhibit, as well as many works from members and fellows of the American Society of Marine artists plus many local artists both established and emerging. And there will be recent work from Ron Frontin, just returned to Art of the Sea.

Also featured will be a number of newly acquired museum-quality ship models and a William Hitchcock diorama, “Kennebec Crossing.” After the great success of last year’s “Masters in Miniature,” Art of the Sea’s artists agreed to paint small works for this event as well as larger paintings.

The 4,500 square foot gallery at the reversing falls is open Mondays through Saturdays from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. For more information, call gallery director Joan Woodhull at 594-9396 or visit artofthesea.com and click on Special Events for a preview of the exhibit.
