Two public tours of the gardens at Maine Coast Heritage Trust’s Erickson Fields Preserve will take place in August with one Thursday, Aug. 1, and the other Aug. 15, at 10 a.m.

Erickson Fields Preserve is a 96-acre property located in Rockport on Route 90 just across from Cross Street. The property was once owned by the Erickson and Wheaton families and is now owned and managed by Maine Coast Heritage Trust who has helped conserve the property and also continues the legacy of farming the property as the original owners had done.

The gardens consist of the Teen Agricultural Crew garden, community garden space, Kids Can Grow program gardens that teach about square foot gardening, and an area for the “Grow a Row” program of growing food that is then donated to the local food pantries. Come and learn about all the different ways the community is engaging with this beautiful property and its prime agricultural soils.

Each tour will start at 10 a.m. and parking is available in the parking lot area, so just turn in at the Erickson Fields sign. The tour is led by MCHT’s Community Program Manager at Erickson Fields Heather Halsey, who also supervises the teen social entrepreneurial program called Teen Ag Crew. Tour group members will meet the Teen Ag Crew and hear about what their work has consisted of so far this spring and summer.

Taking the tour offers the ability to also ask questions about all the different programs offered at the site, learn about volunteer opportunities, and to see the variety of vegetables the “Crew” and others are growing. No RSVP required and the tours are free.
