Don’t miss the opportunity to win a selection of locally made, handmade gifts donated by members of Medomak River Community Market. MRCM is raffling off a great basket to help raise funds for the 501(c)(3) application fee. Come in any time before close of business Aug. 10 and buy a $2 ticket which will grant the opportunity to win a basket valued at more than $200. The basket includes a wide variety of items such as hand thrown mugs, wool felted items, body care products, a diverse selection of cards, and much more. MRCM will pull the winning ticket during the festive weekend planned in Waldoboro Aug. 9 to Aug. 11 celebrating the fire department's 175th anniversary.

MRCM is a small, nonprofit, member-owned business. MRCM currently has 20 working members, a number of consigners and some volunteers. MRCM is managed collectively, and all members have a vote in decisions made at monthly meetings. The cooperative works on a consignment basis with a percentage of selling price to be returned to the individual producer-member and a percentage retained by the cooperative organization to pay overhead such as heat, rent, water, liability insurance etc.

The market is still accepting consignors. Why become part of a cooperative? Arts and crafts cooperatives are used by artists and craftspeople to market their product and maximize their sales income. The percentage returned to the individual producing-member varies from 60 percent to 90 percent dependent on the level of participation of the member. This is often a higher return than one would receive selling products wholesale. The artist/crafter also has much more say in how their products are presented and displayed. Would you like to volunteer in the store? Or help out with a special project like building a float for the Waldoboro parade? Perhaps offer some gardening help to spruce up the area around the store? Business management or marketing advice is always valued! By helping the market, you are helping rebuild the vibrancy of downtown Waldoboro. Those interested in volunteering should email medomakrivercm@gmail.com.
