This summer be adventurous. Explore one possibility for living an active life as you age. Don’t just look at Maine’s lakes and ponds — learn how you can get out on them and explore their shorelines and islands. Spend Thursday morning, July 25, from 9 to 11 a.m. learning entry-level kayaking techniques while having a bit of fun out and about on Chickawaukie Pond.

This introductory recreational kayaking class led by Bill Michaud will focus on basic strokes, skills and safety information needed to enjoy paddling a recreational kayak on Mid-Coast Maine’s calm inland lakes, ponds and rivers. Great for beginners who want to learn the essentials of recreational kayaking, launching techniques, kayaking safety and equipment, weather conditions, and more. The best waters for recreational kayaking will be discussed while you learn how to comfortably paddle and control your boat. Michaud will happily share his extensive knowledge of the sport of kayaking, local waters, surrounding wildlife and habitat.

Gather at the Chickawaukie Pond public boat launch, Johnson Memorial Park, Route 17 in Rockland on July 25 at 8:45 a.m. Participation fee of $20 is payable to the instructor.

Advanced Registration Required. Call 563-1363 by July 24 to reserve your kayak and place in the beginner’s class for active agers and family members who are at least 12.
