“Mechanical Mindscapes,” new watercolors by Katharine Cartwright, NWS, from her award-winning Laws of Nature series, will open Friday, July 5, at Rougette Gallery, on the second floor at 340 Main St. There will be a 5 to 8 p.m. First Friday Art Walk reception for the Spruce Head artist, who will demonstrate her techniques.

The Laws of Nature is a series of watercolor paintings commenting on the natural physical laws that constrain man’s attempt to harness and use the energy and materials of the universe. Each painting within the series provides an aesthetic interpretation of an individual physical law. Painted in watercolor, Cartwright relies entirely upon her imagination and intuition; each new work begins with a lengthily contemplation about a particular physical law.

Cartwright recently earned a top award at the 92nd International Exhibition of the National Watercolor Society in Los Angeles, the second time in a row for a work from the Laws of Nature series at the international juried exhibition that draws thousands of entrants globally. Less than one hundred are selected by a jury and top awards are conferred upon only a few.

In addition to winning numerous national awards for art, Cartwright also has won awards for her scientific research. The Laws of Nature melds her two disciplines through mechanical mindscapes. Her “Ampere's Law” won the prestigious Jack Richeson Award and is in a nationwide traveling NWS exhibition.  Cartwright's work was published in the 2012 book "Journey to Abstraction"; and has been included in numerous national and international publications including the book “The Best of Worldwide Watermedia.”
