Carol Sloane of Washington will be the featured artist at Betts Gallery for the month of July. The public is invited to the opening reception for “Marking the Water” Friday, July 5, from 5:30to 8 p.m. at the gallery, located at The Belfast Framer, 96 Main St.

Sloane was a founding member of the Downtown Gallery, which recently closed after a 17-year run. Her oil paintings on canvas address the theme, posing questions about water.

“Do you play in the bathtub? Watch your clothes wash in the Laundromat? Park for a picnic by a riverbank? Watching water run is mesmerizing. These paintings are markers of my experience,” she said.

Sloane has a slight astigmatism, and things often look surprising to her. Some of the paintings are images of water as it flows past  pilings. The currents, shadows and shifting light is the best kind of challenge to paint, she said.

Betts Gallery is open weekdays from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. and Saturdays from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. For more information, call 338-6465 or visit thebelfastframer.com.
