Archipelago, the Island Institute’s store in downtown Rockland, will host a special book release celebration for “Nic and Nellie” Thursday, July 11, from 4:30 to 6:30 p.m. This summer, Island Institute and Yarmouth’s Islandport Press are teaming for a fundraising effort to celebrate island life, support education and help promote childhood literacy and the joy of reading. As part of that effort, Islandport will donate 10 percent of the revenue generated by sales of “Nic and Nellie,” as well as “The Fish House Door” and “The Scallop Christmas,” to the Island Institute’s Maine Island Scholarship Program.

In addition to the Archipelago event, author and illustrator Astrid Sheckels will make three other Maine appearances to celebrate the release of her new book including a 3 to 5 p.m. signing Friday, July 12, at Camden’s Owl & Turtle Bookshop; for more information, call 230-7335.

“Nic and Nellie” tells the heartwarming story of a young girl who, along with her beloved dog, learns that unfamiliar things really aren’t so scary and that new friends can be found around every corner, even in old row boats, tidal ponds and stinky mud flats.
