Come learn why ferns are more than just fiddleheads! Coastal Mountains Land Trust and the Knox-Lincoln Soil and Water Conservation District will host a summer fern walk Friday, July 12, from 9 a.m. to 11 a.m. on the land trust's Ragged Mountain Preserve.

Participants will meet in the Camden Snow Bowl parking lot and venture up the Hosmer Brook Pond trail. Sturdy hiking shoes, bug repellant and water are suggested.

Hildy Ellis, district coordinator for KLSWCD, will lead this interpretive walk in search of a variety of fern species. Participants will learn how to identify common ferns, which ferns are easy to grow at home from spores, and how these ancient plants have survived since the time of the dinosaurs — without flowers.
