Fox Islands trio Toughcats will perform Friday, June 28, beginning 8 p.m. at Billy's Tavern, corner of Beechwood and Starr streets behind the downtown business block.

Known for their Maine-made progressive bluegrass and Americana pop, Toughcats come from the islands of North Haven and Vinalhaven, 12 miles off the coast of Maine. They are a nationally touring indie Americana rock trio and have been performing together for more than eight years.

The band features Jake Greenlaw on drums (and suitcase); Colin Gulley on electric banjo and Joe Nelson on guitar. Greenlaw and Nelson both sing lead and harmony vocals. Toughcats have released two albums, with a third on the way. Their first, 2006’s Piñata, was recorded and mixed by Joe Nelson and mastered by legendary producer, and Butthole Surfer, Kramer. “Run To The Mill (2010) was mastered by Grammy-winning engineer Adam Ayan at Gateway Studios; and last year’s “Woodenball” was mastered by Jeff Lipton (Spoon, Andrew Bird, Magnetic Fields).
