Saturday, June 22, will mark the opening weekend for the season at Stemwinder Sculpture Works & Gardens as sculptor Jay Sawyer opens his one-man outdoor gallery to the public. The grounds feature several installations that exhibit a special spirit in the park-like space, as well as several works for sale.

To now, Sawyer has promoted his career mainly through openings at his own gallery and group shows at galleries around Maine. This season, he will be represented by Gallery at Somes Sound on Mount Desert Island, as well. Sawyer also has a passion for public art; with a couple of permanent installations under his belt in Knox County, he has two more sculptures in process for public installation about which he hopes to makes announcements in the near future.

Working often with found objects or salvaging demolition debris from sites in Maine, Sawyer has a great appreciation for representing Maine history in his works. Stemwinder is located on Route 90, a quarter mile in from Route 1; look for the landmark patriotic pickup. Warren Day (June 22) hours are 10 a.m. to 5 p.m.; Stemwinder also is open Sundays and Mondays through October. For more information, call 273-3948 or email ibjubu@yahoo.com.
