The Damariscotta Area 4th Sunday Sacred Harp Singing will take place Sunday, June 23, from 2 to 5 p.m. at St. Paul's Union Chapel on Dutchneck Road. A potluck supper will follow, so singers are asked to bring a dish to pass around.

As always, the group welcomes beginners, curious friends and passing strangers to join them in song. The singing is primarily from “The Sacred Harp,” 1991 Denson edition, a shapenote tunebook that has been in continuous publication with periodic revisions since 1844. The music consists of hymns, fugue-ing tunes, anthems and other songs in a style rooted in Colonial New England, popular in Maine up until the Civil War and in areas of the rural South and West up to the present day. Books will be available to borrow or purchase.

The group will discuss plans for the upcoming annual upcoming Maine All Day/Mansfield Singing to be held July 27 and 28 in Union. For more information, contact Barb Ames at 721-9732 or singing@mainesacredharp.org.
