Dena Davis, founder and director of Stories by the Sea, will offer creative writing workshops for children age 6 and older at a variety of Midcoast locations throughout the summer.

Davis has been an educator for 12 years in California and Maine and has worked with children of all ages for many more. The highlight of her teaching career has been working with young writers, helping them discover, develop and celebrate each one’s unique voice and encouraging them to share with a larger audience at their annual Authors’ Teas. She became a National Writing Project Fellow/Teaching Consultant in 2003 through the Southern California Writing Project; led in-service workshops for her colleagues in northern and central California; and led a creative writing club for fourth through sixth graders at the St. George School.

The first workshop is scheduled for Wednesday, June 26, from 9 a.m. to noon at Aldermere Farm in Rockport. Young writers will be led around the farm by local 4-H students to learn about the Belted Galloways, then will listen to poetry and prose about cows, work on their own writing and share with the group. A booklet will be published and presented to the farm. There is a $25 fee for the workshop, for children age 7 and older, and space is limited. To register, call 354-0614 or email mystoriesbythesea@gmail.com.

Next, Davis will lead a poetry workshop, The Animal in Me, at the Coastal Children’s Museum in Rockland for children age 6 and older Friday, June 28, from 9 to 10:30 a.m. Writers will listen to sample poems, explore feelings and animal traits and write their own poems. A booklet will be published and presented to the museum. The workshop is free with admission to the museum, $5 without admission; to register, call 596-0300.

Children age 7 through 9 are invited to a two-day creative writing workshop Monday and Tuesday, July 22 and 23, from 9 a.m. to noon at Sweet Tree Arts in Hope. Children will immerse themselves in stories both from their own experience and from their imaginations while creating story stones and story cubes, telling, moving, and writing stories in a playful, safe environment. They will share their work with the group and learn to give and receive constructive feedback. Cost is $75 plus a $5 materials fee. For more information, visit sweettreearts.org.
