A new gallery featuring Maine photographers will open its doors Saturday, June 15. Keag River Gallery will be open Thursdays through Sundays from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. through October at 25 Dublin Road.

Maine’s beauty has inspired many camera buffs to capture the likeness of its vistas, but where can one go to see the results of many photographers in one space? Mike Dumont wondered about that as he longed for a solution to share his 20-plus-year photography passion in a way that honored other artists and their individual creative processes. He also learned painterly techniques and applied them to his images with digital media. A chance to study in Italy expanded his knowledge and helped him flourish as an artist.

Dumont also wondered if a historic building across the street would be a fitting place for his vision.  Perched on the banks of the Weskeag River, the building’s significant history is sparsely documented, but it includes time as a quarry barracks, the Masonic Lodge and an antique business. It was hard work getting the place ready, said Dumont, but newly refinished floor reflects the light pouring into the space and works of talented Maine photographers adorn the freshly painted walls.

Included are Kevin White’s striking, larger-than-life canvas images of shells and Herman Meisner’s black and white emulsion prints, as well as work by award-winning marine photographer Sandy Dolan. Dumont’s work also is on view. Keag River Gallery also will offer custom photo editing, printing and ARTiPLAQ mounting services. In addition to exhibitions, Dumont’s vision also includes a plan to offer workshops and host events on the substantial deck and grounds.
