The Knox County Sheriff’s Office is reporting a body has been located in the woods off Route 97 in Cushing.

The body is presumed to be that of Kevin Stone Crute, who was reported missing by his family May 25, said a press release from the Knox County Sheriff's Office.

Crute was last seen May 21.

Positive identification along with cause and manner of death will be determined by the Office of the Chief Medical Examiner. An autopsy will be scheduled for sometime this weekend, said the release.

The body was found approximately a half-mile from Crute's home on Route 97, said Knox County Sheriff's Office Chief Deputy Tim Carroll.

The investigation has been ongoing since the initial call from the family came on Saturday, May 25. It was reported at that time that Kevin had not been heard of since Tuesday, May 21.

Along with many other local agencies, members of the sheriff’s office and the Major Crimes Unit from the Maine State Police have been actively searching the area, following leads and interviewing more than 80 people while awaiting cell phone records through search warrants to assist in the search, said the release.

With the information provided, police were able to extend the search area with the assistance from the Maine Warden Service, Maine Search and Rescue, and K-9 teams.

The body was found shortly before 10 a.m. this morning by a Maine Search and Rescue K-9 team.

The recovery was a result of the ongoing investigation, not from a tip; a reward offered by the family was not collected, said Chief Deputy Tim Carroll.
