A little known veteran's memorial event will be happening Saturday, June 15 in Warren. There are probably hundreds of veteran's happenings around the country, but in Warren this is an annual dedication (and memory jogger) to a veteran's breakfast — the Marine Corps SOS Breakfast.

It is hardly necessary to spell out the SOD featured in the breakfast as every Marine, Nay and other military veteran who was nurtured by this concoction will readily recognize the ingredients. But for those who are not, its addictive qualities are simply hamburg in cream sauce on toast — a simple, but fitting dish invented sometime around the Mexican War.

As they say, one a Marine, always a Marine. The same goes for SOS — once eaten, never forgotten.

So the MidCoast Detachment of the Marine Corps League invites all active duty Marines, those that have ever served, and especially all Navy Corpsmen who served with the Marine Corps ashore and afloat — and friends of all the above — to breakfast at the Odd Fellows Hall in Warren at the intersection of Routes 1 and 90.

The chow line opens at 8 a.m. and closes when the SOS runs out. As far as is known, this is the only SOS Memorial Breakfast in the entire world dedicated to all of those who have survived all wars — and creamed hamburg on toast. The menu includes scrambled eggs, SOS, toast, home fries, juice and coffee.

Donations are accepted with all proceeds being used to support Maine's veterans.
