Rockport Public Library announces its upcoming summer reading program.

The events will be held Tuesday afternoons from 3:30 to 4:30 p.m. in the Rockport Opera House Downstairs Room, beginning June 25. The programs are all free and open to children ages 4-12.

Registration for the summer reading program begins June 11.

June 25 – Fairy Garden Tea Party. Help launch the Summer Reading Program as Liza Walsh joins in for a magical fairy garden tea party. Children will have a chance to learn some tricks to attract fairies to their garden. Make a miniature take home garden in a recycled container.

July 2 – Can You Dig the Beat? Join local storyteller Jan Zimmermann in a fun, fast paced hour of African tales, music and dance. Experience the rhythmic culture of Africa by learning a dance and song that will get you clapping, stomping and “digging” that beat!

July 9 – Dig Into Wildlife. Chewonki will bring Stories from the Forest, as they blend literacy and science to discover the forest. With hands-on specimens and activities, we will learn what makes this habitat special.

July 16 – Harbor Cruise. Annual cruise of the harbor with the Rockport harbormaster. In addition time will be spent “digging” for beach treasures. This program meets at the Rockport Harbor. Pre-registration and special permission forms are required.

July 23 – Dig in the Garden. Staff from Aldermere Farm will be here to present a hands-on program on gardening.

July 30 – Digging for Buried Treasure. Tom Crudbeard and Bloodthirsty Barbara of the Pirates of the Dark Rose will entertain with a pirate telling of "Treasure Island," after which we will wrap up the summer reading program with a buried treasure hunt!

Summer reading is made possible through a gift from the MLDC Charitable Fund. For more information contact Kim Slocomb at kslocomb@rockport.lib.me.us or 236-3642.
