The Rockland Breakwater has been nominated for VirtualTourist.com’s quest to crown the "8th Wonder of the World,” by the Historic Inns of Rockland.

Public voting begins June 3 and continues through Sept. 30 at VirtualTourist.com, a leading travel research website and community that is part of TripAdvisor Media Group.

Many landmarks from throughout the world have been nominated, but the Rockland Breakwater is the only nominee from Midcoast Maine. The winner of the 8th Wonder of the World contest will be the landmark with the most votes as of Sept. 30.

Nearly a mile long, 55-feet high, requiring an Act of Congress and built by hand over 20 years Rockland Breakwater is 700,000 tons of granite protecting Rockland Harbor. It’s the ultimate walkway to the sea.

“We think its sheer size and mass qualifies the Rockland Breakwater as the 8th Wonder of the World, plus it’s an important Penobscot Bay landmark” said Cheryl Michaelsen, among those innkeepers nominating the Breakwater for the contest. “We hope Maine residents will vote for the Rockland Breakwater and share the contest via social networking sites to encourage others to vote too."

Numerous Tourism Boards, Chambers of Commerce and Visitor Bureaus have nominated landmarks around the world, and the public is asked to vote for their favorite out of the more than 200 submissions. Yet only the Rockland Breakwater was nominated from Midcoast Maine, making it the state’s icon in the contest.

Voters can visit virtualtourist.com/8thwonder to vote daily for the Rockland Breakwater, and have until Sept. 30 to do so. Each person may vote once a day from June 3 to Sept. 30. The wonder with the most votes will be crowned the winner and will be featured in a national broadcast TV segment on a popular syndicated program as well as receive a massive media relations campaign push from VirtualTourist.

“It’s wonderful to have a nomination from every corner of the world so we are thrilled to receive the Rockland Breakwater as a nomination from the Penobscot Bay region” said Giampiero Ambrosi, general manager of VirtualTourist.com. “As one of the best travel guide resources on the web, members and visitors to our site have been to almost every country in the world. We are eager to see which landmark they will choose to be crowned the 8th Wonder of the World.”
