At the recent Pen Bay Healthcare Annual Volunteer Recognition celebration, several different Pen Bay groups were recognized for yearlong accomplishments and distinguished volunteer careers.

The event honored Pen Bay's in-hospital volunteers; the Spiritual Care volunteers; the Pen Bay Healthcare Board of Trustees and wonderful group of knitters known as the Pen Bay Stitchers.

Six volunteers received the 2013 Governor's Award for Service and Volunteerism for contributing more than 500 hours of service in 2012. They received a personalized certificate and were named to the Roll of Honor.

Presidential Service Awards were presented to 32 volunteers, including seven Lifetime Achievement Awards to folks who have contributed more than 4,000 hours during their volunteer careers; one Gold Award for contributing between 500 and 3999 annual hours; eight Silver Awards for contributing between 250 and 499 annual hours; and 17 Bronze awards for contributing between 100 and 249 annual hours. These folks received a personalized certificate of achievement from the President's Council on Service and Civic participation, a congratulatory letter signed by President Obama and an official President's Volunteer Service Award lapel pin.

Handmade treasures donated by the Pen Bay Stitchers were on display. The family of every baby born at Pen Bay has the opportunity to select a blanket or hat made with TLC to welcome their new little bundle of joy. Some items are used in raffles to raise funds to buy more yarn. Also on display was an In Memory tribute honoring volunteers who have passed away during the past year.

A poster asking, "You've been here HOW LONG?" listed the length of service of each volunteer from those who recently began to Suzanne Armstrong and Charlotte Root who have volunteered for more than 34 years at Pen Bay.

The annual celebration provides a special opportunity to thank these wonderful folks who make a difference in the lives of patients, families, visitors and staff at Pen Bay each and every day. Their contributions are priceless and they are truly appreciated and valued.
