At a May 30 ceremony at the downtown SPACE Gallery, the winners of the 2013 Maine Literary Awards were announced live.

Among them are Richard Russo of Camden and his daughter Kate Russo of Rockland, who, with Tom Butler, shared the Excellence in Publishing award for their innovative Down East Books volume “Interventions.” Also named a winner was Karyn Lie-Nielsen of Waldoboro in the Short Works Competition: Poetry.

This year, 110 books were entered in 11 categories. Sixty manuscripts were submitted into the award’s Short Works Competition in the categories of fiction, nonfiction, poetry, and drama; and more than 50 Maine students submitted work to the Youth Competition. Finalists hailed from every corner of the state.
